This report analyses the nature of variable renewable energy and the resulting challenges associated with integrating variable renewable energy technologies into a power system. It highlights the importance of increased flexibility when integrating high levels of variable renewable energy. It focuses on two sets of options to provide such flexibility: natural gas-fired power generation technologies and energy storage. The report also provides insight into the implications of variable renewable energy expansion for planning and regulation, and it makes some recommendations for planners and policymakers.
