Water Embodied in Food
Virtual or embodied water is the water embedded in consumer products. The concept was developed to help track the trade of virtual water in international trade relations in order to conserve water in countries with water scarcity. The water footprint of a product is an indicator of how much water is consumed over the whole supply chain of the product (“Frequently Asked Questions”, The Water Footprint Network). In relation to agriculture and food production, the “water footprint of a nation is related to dietary habits of people” (“The Concepts of Water Footprint and Virtual Water”, The Global Development Research Center). This section includes virtual water or water footprint research and associated practices for improving water resource management in agriculture and food processing.
